Albania's vast landscapes and Mediterranean beaches attract tourists from all over the world. Due to Albania's proximity to Greece, a lot of tourists visit as an alternative. The recent increase in tourism in Albania not only affects its economy, but the culture of its people. In an interview on English in Albania, Kellen Mayes stated that (2019) most young Albanians learn English to work within the tourism industry for "outdoor adventure companies, hostels, and city tour companies," or learn English to simply travel themselves.
Albanians in the past have commonly left to Greece in order to work with tourism companies. Now as Albania's tourist population increases, Albanians don't have to go far to find employment as long as they know English. This table shows the increase in tourism in Albania and one can see a spike in the year of 2009. After coming to an end of a great recession and growing in its economy as well as democracy, Albania attracted a new wave of tourists who were previously hesitant to visit.
